Thailand monthly rubber report - May 2018

       May average RSS3 price announced by Central Rubber Market in Songkhla stood at 52 Baht/kg, up 5.46 % from April due to the following factors. Overall rubber prices climbed up in tune with those of foreign futures market and were supported by physical demand buying amid tight output due to heavy rains in Thai plantation areas. Thai baht depreciated against stronger US dollar as bond yield rallied to 3.004%. USA’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal has raised concerns that the global supply of oil will be squeezed, pushing up the price of Brent Crude. Global stock markets improved after US and China agreed to abandon any trade war and back off from imposing tariffs on each other. ANRPC reported in April that China and India consumption to grow by 6.2% and 10.9% in 2018. Profits of China's major industrial firms saw steady growth of 15 % for the January-April period. China's producer price index (PPI), which measures costs of goods at the factory gate, rose 3.4 percent year-on-year in April, up from the 3.1 percent recorded in March.

       In April, Thailand exported 347,998 tons of natural rubber (including compound rubber), up 24.26 % from March and 25.15 % yoy, generating export income of US$ 507.79 million, up 31.46 % from March, down 10.14 % yoy. Overall, during the first 4 months, Thai NR exports (including compound rubber) reached 1,280,451 tons, up 0.96 % yoy. The YTD export value touched US$ 1.78 billion, down 27.36 % yoy.     

       In tyre sector, in April Thailand exported 9.5 million units of all tyres, up 10.54 % yoy, with the export value of US$ 344.68 million, up 15.04 % yoy. Overall,  in January to April Thai exports of all tyres reached 42.44 million units, up 10.34 % yoy, generating export revenue of US$ 1.51 billion, up 16.06 % yoy.
